We reached out to Jasmine Shea (Nutrition Consultant for Bubs Naturals, founder of Your Dinner Is Planned) to learn about common turkey mistakes that people make when cooking. We have a lot of tips and tricks for making this year’s turkey the best.

1. Make a mistake: Never wash your turkey before you cook it
It is a common belief that washing sarma recept the raw turkey will kill the bacteria that can cause food poisoning. The bacteria can spread to your kitchen if you rinse the turkey. Everyone should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds after handling turkeys. The only way to kill bacteria in turkey is to cook it to the right internal temperature.

2. Make a mistake: Thaw the turkey on the counter
To make sure your turkey’s safety, don’t let it thaw on the counter. The ideal environment for bacteria growth in a room temperature environment can cause serious illness to you and your guests.

3. Make a mistake: Thaw your turkey in water
If you choose to thaw the turkey in a bowl filled with water, instead of the refrigerator, make sure to change the water every 30 minutes. This is recommended by the CDC to maintain safe temperatures and prevent dangerous bacteria from growing.

4. Make a mistake: Don’t leave the turkey out for longer than 2 hours
This is one of the biggest turkey mistakes you should be aware of this Thanksgiving. Two hours is the mark when the CDC declares that you have crossed the line of safety. If you leave your turkey out on the counter or in the car for more than 2 hours, it’s best to be safe and get a new turkey.

5. Make a mistake: If you are not able to cook the turkey right away, don’t buy a fresh one.
You should ensure that the date you purchase fresh turkeys from your local butcher, meat supplier or grocer is in line with your Thanksgiving dinner plans. If the turkey was purchased fresh, you will need to cook it immediately. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, the maximum time you should allow a fresh turkey to chill in the refrigerator is 1-2 days.
